ABSTRACT

The objective goal of this study is to mapping the coastal environmental sensitivity area as an important tool that can be used as an input in managing the riverbasin and coastal area towards any of human activity impact.  Prioritizing of protection of an area from any human-derived impact could be determined by using the result of environmental sensitivity map.  The area which is determined as sensitive or very sensitive should be prioritized in term of impact mitigation.  The results show that the sensitivity level of both natural features and human-use profiles of the study area ranges from Less Sensitive to Very Sensitive level.  Muddy substrate is classified as Very Sensitive due to its vulnerability towards any external environmental disturbance.  The Very Sensitive class of riverine type is commonly observed at the end of Musi-Telang River and Banyuasin river, which are located in the border with estuary of Musi and Banyuasin Rivers.  Muddy substrate is mostly correlated with mangrove community which is also commonly found in the study area.  However, mangrove community generally observed in the study area is not in good condition, in terms ecological and economical condition, which result in dominant class of Moderate. Sensitive class of mangrove ecosystem is observed especially in the river mouth of Musi River (end of Musi-Telang river) and close to river mouth of Banyuasin River.  The recommendations derived from the study are as follows: (i) to be always aware and ready for any oil spill accident in the area especially where the class of environmental sensitivity is Sensitive and Very Sensitive, both for offshore and onshore working area; and (ii) the classification of environmental sensitivity level produced by this study can be used as input of company’s oil spill response plan.
